Creating Accessible Websites

Web Accessibility is more than just common sense, it's also the law

No-one would deliberatly exclude someone from their high street shop due to a disability, not only does it make no sense, but we also know it is against the law (Disability Discrimination Act). However, a look around business websites in the UK shows that a number of businesses do exclude people with disabilities from their websites

Normally for no good reason other than ignorance!

With just a little consideration from designers, most websites can be easily accessible to all web users. Things like making sure there is a textual alternative to images, using normal links for navigation, and using well structured HTML. In fact, all of the things your website should do for good Search Engine Optimisation.

Check your website out

Enter your website URL below, and we will retreive a copy of it using Lynx, a text only web browser. See how much sense your site makes with the images and layout removed. If you find your site hard to follow like this, then ask us about a redesign. It will not only help you meet your legal requirements, but will also help improve your listings with the search engines.

Enter your site's homepage address

Please give the full URL, including the http:// or https:// at the start

Notes:

  1. This will only check regular web pages (htm, html, php, asp) and show a static image of that page
  2. Use the exact url of your page (copy and paste it from a web browser). Redirections will not be accepted by this script.
  3. Pages with a query string (a ? in the url) will not be accepted.
  4. You will not be able to follow the links to view other parts of the page.
  5. Numbers in square brackets [1] show hyperlinks, these are referenced at the bottom of the page

To get a fuller idea of how your website looks when stripped down to it's basics, try downloading a copy of Lynx.
